BOWLING GREEN, Ohio -- Senior Scott Thomas knocked down five of his first six three-point attempts en route to a career-high 28 points, and the Bowling Green men’s basketball team recorded a 73-60 victory over Morehead State on Saturday afternoon at the brand-new Stroh Center.
The Falcons, from the Mid-American Conference, improve to 14-12 with their fifth win in the past six games. The Eagles, who entered the day with six victories in their past eight contests, fall to 15-14. The affair was part of the annual
Sears BracketBusters event.
Thomas scored 20 points in the first half on 7-of-12 from the floor, including 6-of-10 from three-point range. Thomas, who finished 10-of-18 and 8-of-15 in those two categories, also contributed four rebounds, four assists and three steals in the win. His eight long balls were also a career best.
Bowling Green drilled 60 percent (15-of-25) from the field before the break on its way to 57 percent (28-of-49) for the game. The Falcons also converted 63 percent (10-of-16) from beyond the arc in the first half en route to 54 percent (14-of-26) for the afternoon.
Senior Dee Brown was the other Falcon in double figures with 19 points on 8-of-11 shooting. Junior Jordon Crawford dished out a game-best 12 assists and was credited with three steals for BGSU.
Senior Ty Proffitt led Morehead State with 18 points on 7-of-12 from the field and 3-of-4 from the charity stripe. He scored 11 straight MSU points during a four-minute stretch in the second half.
Sophomore Drew Kelly added 12 points and five rebounds in just 20 minutes due to foul trouble. He made 6-of-9 from the floor, helping the Eagles to 48 percent (23-for-48) overall.
MSU posted advantages of 18-10 off the bench and 26-24 in the paint, but BGSU collected 27 more points via the three-point line to keep its distance throughout the contest.
The Eagles jumped out to a 9-3 lead less than four minutes in, but the Falcons responded with a 30-12 spurt to build a 12-point cushion with just over seven minutes before intermission.
Bowling Green’s biggest advantage, 62-41, came with 8:13 remaining in the second half.
Morehead State, which leads the Ohio Valley Conference by allowing just 61.9 points per game, had held its previous 10 opponents under 70 points.
MSU wraps up the regular season with a pair of games at Johnson Arena. The Eagles welcome Eastern Illinois on Thursday and SIU Edwardsville on Saturday. Both games will start at approximately 7:30 p.m. ET after MSU women’s games against the same opponents.
