GAME NOTES | TOURNAMENT CENTRAL
MOREHEAD, Ky. – The Morehead State softball team (1-3, 0-0 OVC) heads to Bowling Green, Ky., for the Hilltopper Spring Classic on Feb. 25-26 and will play four games over the weekend.
The Eagles begin the event at 12 p.m. ET Saturday against Ohio Valley Conference rival Murray State, before facing off with host Western Kentucky at 4 p.m. On Sunday, MSU will face Bowling Green at 10 a.m. ET, followed by a 2 p.m. tilt against Indiana State.
Murray State is currently 2-0 on the season, with wins over Ole Miss and Belmont. The host Lady Toppers open their 2012 home season with the Hilltopper Spring Classic and enter the event at 6-3. Bowling Green opened the season going 2-1 at the Tiger Invitational Tournament on Feb. 10-11 with wins over Wright State and Alabama State. Indiana State opens its 2012 slate this weekend with first-year Head Coach Shane Bouman.
The Eagles opened their schedule last weekend at the College of Charleston Classic in Mount Pleasant, S.C. MSU and first-year Head Coach
David Williams came away with a 1-3 record, posting a 7-2 win over the host Cougars.
Juniors
Anna Sommer and
Amber Riddle led the Eagles at the CofC Classic, with both players posting batting averages above .400. Sommer tallied a .500 average with five hits, four runs, three RBI and one double in just 10 at-bats. Riddle recorded a .455 average after notching five hits, four runs, three RBI, one double and MSU’s first home run of the season.
Senior pitcher
Jami Whitcomb notched the Eagles’ lone victory in the CofC Classic over the Cougars. The senior from Milan, Ill., pitched a complete game while only allowing two earned runs on six hits in seven innings. Whitcomb also had four strikeouts.
In the opening tournament the Eagles showed their commitment to defense totaling a .992 fielding percentage, with all but one player tallying a 1.000 percentage. MSU only registered one error in four games and also posted two rare 9-to-3 put-outs with Sommer and Riddle teaming up to make the stops.
Following the Hilltopper Spring Classic, Morehead State travels to Woodstock, Ga., for the Buzz Classic March 2-4.
