BOWLING GREEN, Ky. – The Morehead State softball team scored all eight of its runs in the first two innings, and senior
Jami Whitcomb pitched her third complete game of the season as the Eagles ran past Indiana State 8-2 in the Hilltopper Spring Classic at WKU Softball Field on Sunday. The Eagles fell to Bowling Green 6-3 earlier in the day as the Falcons scored twice in the first, third and fifth innings to get the win.
The Eagles moved to 2-6 on the season, while the Sycamores fell to 1-2 and BGSU improved to 3-3.
Whitcomb improved to 2-1 in 2012 with all three outings being complete games. Ashli Scott was tagged with the loss for the Sycamores (1-2). Junior pitcher
Katie Pfost (0-2) took the loss for MSU against the Falcons, with Jamie Kertes (1-2) earning the win.
MSU started fast in the first inning against ISU, capitalizing on several Sycamore miscues. Junior
Adrena Anderson, scored via a wild pitch after singling to left field. She advanced to third following junior
Anna Sommer’s walk and a sacrifice bunt by sophomore
Stephanie Etter. Sommer then crossed the plate after junior
Elizabeth Wagner reached on an error by the ISU shortstop.
The Eagles continued their strong start in the second inning, with all nine MSU hitters making plate appearances in the six-run inning. Morehead State got hits from seven of the first eight batters.
Junior
Amber Riddle went 2-for-4 with two RBI and a double, while Anderson went 3-for-4 with two runs and a stolen base. Etter went 2-for-3 with an RBI and a run scored.
Whitcomb notched six strikeouts, allowed just one earned run, and gave up just one walk in seven innings of work.
Morehead State tallied eight runs on 11 hits. Indiana State recorded two runs on seven hits and committed four errors.
Against BGSU, Katie Yoho gave the Falcons an early two-run lead in the first inning with a double to right field. Yoho added to the lead in the third inning with a two-run homer to center. Sophomore pitcher
Kelcey McMurray relieved Pfost in the fourth, tallying five strikeouts in four innings. But she also gave up two homeruns in the fifth, including the second of the game for Yoho.
Anderson went 2-for-4 with a run and an RBI to lead the Eagles.
MSU registered three runs on seven hits, while Bowling Green registered six runs on eight hits.
The Eagles next head to Woodstock, Ga., for the Buzz Classic on March 2-4.
