"MSU CARES" CAMPAIGN | MSU MEN'S BASKETBALL VIDEO
MOREHEAD, Ky. -- The Morehead State men's basketball team handed out 394 assists this past winter, but its most notable assist was the work it did to help Kentucky's tornado victims last week. The Eagles travelled to WKYT-TV in Lexington to take phone calls for the "Kentucky Cares" campaign, which supports efforts by the American Red Cross.
According to Kentucky.com, the "Kentucky Cares" campaign has already raised more than $400,000 for those in need throughout Eastern Kentucky. Morehead State has also put together its own plan, called "MSU Cares," and the university strongly encourages Eagle fans to assist in any way they can (financial contributions, volunteering time, etc.).
"The events of March 2 were certainly tragic, and we want to do anything we can to assist those people in need," Morehead State Head Coach Donnie Tyndall said. "Over 1,500 MSU students have been impacted directly by this terrible event. It's our hope that we can help a life get a little bit better and help a community grow a little bit more."
United States President Barack Obama issued a major disaster declaration for Kentucky last week, triggering the release of federal funds to help people recover from the awful storms. The action made federal funding available to businesses and residents in Johnson, Kenton, Laurel, Lawrence, Menifee, Morgan and Pendleton counties.
"To have Coach (Donnie) Tyndall and the (MSU men's basketball) team give of their time, and come to Lexington to answer phones for the Kentucky Cares campaign, is truly remarkable," WKYT-TV News Anchor and MSU Alumnus Amber Philpott said. "It's been amazing to see what the university has been able to do in a short amount of time."
