CLARKSVILLE, Tenn. – The Morehead State softball team split two games versus Ohio Valley Conference foe Austin Peay on Saturday, dropping a 2-1 heartbreaker before rebounding for a 4-3 extra-inning win at Cheryl Holt Field.
MSU moves to 8-16 and 2-7 in conference action, while the Governors fall to 8-16 and 2-8 in league play.
Morehead State plated the first run of the day in game one, as junior
Elizabeth Wagner doubled down the right field line in the top of the fourth inning. Junior
Amber Riddle then notched an RBI single to center field to score Wagner.
APSU answered in the bottom of the inning with help from an Eagle miscue. Catie Cozart started the Governor rally, singling up the middle. After a throwing error by the shortstop to keep the inning alive, Amy Mills singled down the right field line, scoring Cozart.
Heading into the bottom of the seventh inning and still tied at 1-1, the Governors posted the final run of the game as Lauren de Castro smacked an RBI single up the middle, bringing home pinch runner Courtney Ervin.
Junior pitcher
Katie Pfost (2-6) took the loss for the Eagles in game one, despite allowing only one earned run, six hits, zero walks and striking out four Governors. Morgan Brewer (3-7) earned the complete game win for APSU.
The Eagles notched four hits and had one error, while Austin Peay tallied six hits. Wagner, Riddle, senior

Katie Raile each posted a base knock.
Morehead State took an early 1-0 lead in the third inning of game two on an RBI double from junior
Anna Sommer. With two outs, senior
Samm Sparks reached on an APSU fielding error, followed by a single back to the pitcher from junior
Adrena Anderson to advance Sparks to second.
The Governors tied the contest at 1-1 in the bottom of the inning, as de Castro doubled down the left field line. She then scored on a throwing error by the short stop as Lauren Bradley reached on the miscue.
Riddle put the Eagles up 3-1 in the top of the sixth with her eighth home run of the season, a two-run shot to left field that also scored Brill, who was hit by a pitch earlier in the inning.
APSU would again rally to tie the score at 3-3 in the bottom of the seventh, as de Castro once again provided a big hit for the home team, belting a two-RBI triple to left field.
In the eighth, the Eagles took advantage of Governor miscues to earn the victory. Brill opened the inning by reaching on a fielding error by the pitcher and then was advanced on a sacrifice bunt from sophomore
Stephanie Etter. Brill then scored the game-winning run as junior
Kayla Ashbrook smacked a hard fly out to right field, but the ball was lost in the sun and dropped.
Senior
Jami Whitcomb (4-4) tallied the win for the Eagles, pitching a complete game while only allowing two earned runs and surrendering no walks. de Castro (4-4) posted the loss for the Govs.
Morehead State and APSU each recorded seven hits, while the Eagles had two errors to the Governors’ three. Riddle led MSU with two hits, two RBI and a run, while Sommer went 3-for-4 and an RBI. Anderson and Ashbroook registered the other two Eagle hits.
MSU and Austin Peay face off in the rubber match Sunday at 1 p.m. CT.
