CLARKSVILLE, Tenn. – The Morehead State softball team fell 7-3 in the rubber match against Ohio Valley Conference foe Austin Peay on Sunday at Cheryl Holt Field.
MSU falls to 8-17 and 2-8 in OVC play. The Lady Govs improve to 9-16 and 3-8 in conference action.
Sophomore
Kelcey McMurray (1-3) took the loss for the Eagles, while APSU’s Morgan Brewer (4-7) earned her second win of the weekend.
APSU grabbed an early 3-0 lead in the first inning on four hits and an Eagle error by the centerfielder, including a lead-off home run from Lauren de Castro.
The Eagles answered with three runs in the third inning, using four hits and a Lady Gov miscue to rally. Freshman
Katie Raile started it off with a single up the middle, followed by sophomore
Jamie Massaro reaching on a fielding error by the shortstop. Junior
Adrena Anderson notched a bunt single to load the bases. Junior
Anna Sommer then plated Raile with a hit. After a double play by APSU, senior
Kayla Brill slammed a double to center field to score Anderson and Sommer.
The Governors broke the 3-3 tie indefinitely in the following inning, plating four runs in the fourth on three hits, including a double down the left field line. An MSU error also contribued to the scoring inning.
Austin Peay outhit the Eagles 11-5, with both teams recording two errors in the contest. Anderson led MSU, going 2-for-3, while Brill posted two RBI and a double.
The Eagles travel for a single midweek game at Eastern Kentucky on Thursday at 3 p.m. ET, before returning home to face Jacksonville State. MSU and the Gamecocks are scheduled to play a doubleheader on Saturday starting at 1 p.m., followed by a single game on Sunday at 1 p.m.
