GLENCOE, Ala. -- Juniors Jared Flanery and Crit Reddick registered season-best performances for the Morehead State men’s golf team on Tuesday in the 2012 Grub Mart Intercollegiate. Flanery tallied a final-round 71 to tie for second out of 50 golfers, while Reddick posted a 76 to tie for fourth.
Flanery (2) and Reddick (3) have now combined for all five of MSU’s top-five performances this year. Flanery’s previous best was 10th out of 75, while Reddick’s was sixth out of 92.
“Jared had a real good tournament and Crit played well despite a bum knee,” Morehead State Head Coach Dr. Rex Chaney said. “Both guys made five footers they were missing earlier this season. They hit it off the tee fairly well and it was good to see some execution in their short games.”
The Eagles carded a 308 in the final round at the Silver Lakes Golf Course en route to a 926, which placed fifth out of nine squads. MSU finished ahead of Ohio Valley Conference foes Tennessee Tech (935) and Tennessee State (943).
Host Jacksonville State won the affair with a three-round total of 897, while Eastern Kentucky (909) placed second, UT Martin (922) finished third and George Washington (925) closed out at fourth.
“Credit Jacksonville State with the way they played in this tournament,” Chaney said. “Scores were higher than normal for all nine teams because Silver Lakes is a very difficult golf course. The greens were hard and the ball was bouncing everywhere.”
Senior Dean Schneider recorded a 79 in the final round for MSU, while junior Sam Zirnheld managed an 82 and sophomore Michael Pinsonneault turned in an 85. Junior Matt Logan, playing as an individual for the Eagles, also carded an 85.
JSU senior Tom Robson earned medalist honors by firing a 73 on Tuesday to finish at 216. The course featured a par of 72 and yardage of 7,040.
“I’m a little disappointed with the way we scored as a team,” Chaney added. “We certainly have some things to work on before the OVC Championship. We need to be mentally tougher when we hit a bogey or double bogey. We didn’t do that very well in Alabama and it hurt us on the scoreboard.”
Morehead State wraps up its regular-season slate next Monday and Tuesday when it plays in Tennessee State’s Big Blue Intercollegiate at the Hermitage Golf Course in Old Hickory, Tenn.
