Eagle Softball Drops Two at Murray State

MURRAY, Ky. –
The Morehead State softball team suffered a couple of road losses at the hands of Ohio Valley Conference foe Murray State on a windy Saturday at Racer Field.  The Racers plated runs in every inning in game one en route to a 13-4 run-rule win over the Eagles in six innings, before topping Morehead State 9-3 in game two. 

The Eagles fall to 11-27 and 4-15 in Ohio Valley Conference action, while Murray State improves to 19-14 and 12-8 in league play.  Junior Katie Pfost (4-10) suffered the loss for the Eagles in the opening game and sophomore Kelcey McMurray (1-5) took the loss in game two.  Shelby Kosmecki (9-8) and Chelsey Sullivan (8-4) earned the wins for the Racers, respectively.

The Racers opened the first contest plating at least one run in the first three innings to build an early 4-1 lead.  Morehead State earned its first run of the game in the third as junior Adrena Anderson came home on a fielding error by the Racer shortstop.

Murray State moved its lead to 8-1 with a four-run inning in the fourth on six hits and an Eagle miscue.

Morehead State rallied to within 8-4 on senior Kayla Brill’s seventh double of the game in the top of the fifth inning, scoring Anderson and sophomore Stephanie Etter.  Brill then came home on a wild pitch from Kosmecki.

Murray State responded with three runs in the bottom half of the fifth on three hits and an Eagle error.  The game ended an inning later as Meghan Sims smashed a two-run home run to left center to end the game in six innings.

The Racers outhit Morehead State 14-7, while each team had two errors in the contest.  Anderson and Etter each went 2-for-3 for the Eagles, with Anderson tallying two runs.  Brill notched two RBI plus a hit and a run for Morehead State.

Leslie Bridges went 3-for-3 with two RBI and run for the Racers.

Morehead State tallied the second game’s first run in the second inning on an Anderson RBI-single up the middle, plating junior Kayla Ashbrook for a 1-0 lead.

The Racers answered with five straight runs, including three runs on two home runs in the bottom of the second as Mandi Kellerman smoked a two-run bomb to left field, followed by a single shot to right field from Ellyn Troup.

The Eagles moved within two at 5-3 with two runs in the fifth, highlighted by RBI-singles from Wagner and Ashbrook.

The Racers broke the game open with four runs in the bottom half of the inning to move ahead 9-3.  The frame was keyed by an RBI single from Kellerman.

Murray State notched 11 hits to the Eagles’ seven and Morehead State hampered itself with three errors, while the Racers had one miscue.  Ashbrook led the Eagles with a 2-for-3 performance plus an RBI and a run.  Anderson notched two hits and an RBI in the outing.

Kellerman went 2-for-4 for the Racers, including three RBI and a run.

Morehead State concludes its three-game series with Murray State on Sunday with a single game at 2 p.m. ET.
