MURRAY, Ky. – The Morehead State softball team out-powered Murray State to a 10-9 win in the series finale at Racer Field on Sunday. The Eagles tallied 20 hits on the day in the victory, and junior
Adrena Anderson posted a career day with a 5-for-6 performance plus three runs and an RBI.
Morehead State improves to 12-27 and 5-15 in Ohio Valley Conference action, while Murray State falls to 19-25 on the season and 12-9 in league play. Freshman
Brittni Chapman (1-2) earned her first win of the season in 1.2 innings of relief pitching. Chelsey Sullivan (8-5) suffered the loss for the Racers.
The Eagles opened the contest plating three runs in the first two innings. Hits from Anderson, junior
Elizabeth Wagner and sophomore
Stephanie Etter in the first inning propelled Morehead State to a 2-0. Etter followed that up with her second hit of the game to bring home sophomore
Jamie Massaro and take a 3-0 lead in the second.
The Racers answered with a solo home run from Alexa Becker to deep center field in the bottom part of the frame.
Morehead State pushed its lead to 6-1 with a three-run inning in the fourth, highlighted by Wagner’s two-RBI double up the middle.
Murray State looked to rally in the bottom of the inning, but the Eagles’ second double play of the game halted the Racer rally at one run in the frame.
The Eagles notched a run in the top of the sixth inning on three hits but the Racers cut the lead to three at 7-4 in the bottom of the frame on a Casey Castile two-run homer to centerfield.
Junior
Amber Riddle registered a single to right field to score Anderson in the top of the seventh to move the lead to 8-4 heading into the bottom of the seventh.
The contest headed to extra innings after the Racers tallied four runs on four hits and an Eagle error in the bottom of the
seventh to tie the game at 8-8.
With two outs in the top of the eighth inning Massaro notched an RBI-single to plate freshman
Katie Raile, who sprinted from first base to home. Massaro advanced to third on junior
Anna Sommer’s double to right center and was plated on Anderson’s fifth hit of the game.
Murray State registered a run in the bottom half of the inning, but Chapman and the Eagle defense held tight to secure the win.
Along with Anderson, Etter went 3-for-6 with three RBI and two runs to lead the Eagles. Six other Eagles also registered two hits in the outing, with Wagner grabbing two RBI.
Alexa Becker went 4-for-5 plus three RBI and two runs for the Racers.
The Eagles continue their road trip to Huntington, W.Va., for a doubleheader against regional rival Marshall on Wednesday. First pitch is scheduled for 2 p.m. ET.
