Softball Looks to Continue Improvement at SIU Edwardsville

GAME NOTES

MOREHEAD, Ky. –
The Morehead State softball team travels to Edwardsville, Ill., for a three-game series against SIU Edwardsville this weekend.  MSU and the Cougars are scheduled to play a doubleheader on Friday at 2 p.m. ET, followed by a single game on Saturday at 2 p.m.

The Eagles sit at 10-19 this season, with a 4-10 tally in the Ohio Valley Conference.  SIU Edwardsville owns a 13-20 mark and is 5-8 in league action.  The Cougars finished fourth in the conference standings a year ago.

MSU’s doubleheader versus Dayton was cancelled in the top of the fifth inning in game one on Wednesday.  Dayton was leading 2-1 in the fifth when the contest was called because of rain and field conditions.  The game was ruled a no decision and any stats accumulated did not count toward season totals.

MSU won its first series of the season with two wins over Jacksonville State last weekend, while also securing its first series win over JSU since 2008.  The Eagles tallied a 4-1 win in game one, followed by a six-inning 10-2 run-rule decision in game two on Saturday.  Game two’s 10-2 run-rule decision marked the first time in program history that MSU had run-ruled the Gamecocks.  MSU dropped the series finale 7-4 on Sunday.

Junior right fielder Anna Sommer provided much of the Eagle offense in two wins over the Gamecocks on Saturday.  In game one she went 2-for-3 with two runs and an RBI.  She followed that up with another 2-for-3 performance in game two with two RBI in the outing.  On the season, Sommer ranks third on the team with 14 RBI and has 24 hits to her name.

Junior pitcher Katie Pfost earned her third victory of the year in MSU’s 4-1 game one win over Jacksonville State.  She pitched a complete game, while only allowing seven hits and one earned run in the contest.

Morehead State next returns home to host two non-conference opponents during the upcoming week.  On Tuesday, the Eagles face Butler in a doubleheader set for 2 p.m., and MSU hosts Miami University Thursday in a doubleheader scheduled for 2 p.m.
