MOREHEAD, Ky. -- The Eastern Kentucky men’s basketball team posted advantages of 38-10 in the paint and 24-4 off turnovers in a 68-47 win over Morehead State on Saturday night at Johnson Arena.
The Colonels improve to 19-6 overall, 8-3 in the Ohio Valley Conference and 7-5 on the road with their third straight victory. The Eagles slip to 11-14 on the year, 5-6 in league play and 8-4 at home.
“Tonight was a very discouraging effort from our guys,” Head Coach Sean Woods said. “We had a chance to make a statement against our rival in front of a great home crowd and we didn’t do it.”
Junior Glenn Cosey led three Eastern Kentucky players in double figures with 17 points. Cosey and sophomore Corey Walden paced the Colonels with six rebounds apiece, while senior Mike DiNunno added a game-high five assists.
The game featured just one tie and two lead changes -- all in the first five minutes. Eastern Kentucky never trailed after putting together an 8-0 run early in the first half. The Colonels led by a game-high 24 points with 1:40 remaining.
Morehead State connected on just 33 percent (14-of-43) for the game, including 22 percent (5-of-23) in the first period. The Eagles also drilled just 27 percent (4-of-15) from three-point range.
Eastern Kentucky knocked down 47 percent (24-of-51) overall, including 61 percent (14-of-23) after intermission. The Colonels also rattled home 89 percent (16-of-18) from the foul line.
Eastern Kentucky, which entered the affair 332nd out of 345 Divison I schools in rebounding margin, tallied a 32-24 upper hand on the boards. MSU had outrebounded 10 of its last 11 opponents.
The Colonels also turned 17 Morehead State turnovers into 24 points, while the Eagles managed just four points off 11 Eastern Kentucky mistakes. In addition, EKU registered a 9-5 edge in steals.
“This was another game where turnovers and points off turnovers were a problem for us,” Woods said. “Eastern Kentucky got way too many easy buckets tonight as a result of our mistakes.”
Morehead State had just six players record a field goal and three individuals knock down a three. Sophomore Angelo Warner paced the Eagles with 16 points, while junior Bakari Turner added 10.

“We need to figure this out in a hurry,” Woods added. “We are struggling across the board and everyone in our locker room knows it. I’ll be interested to see how we practice this week.”
