MOREHEAD, Ky. – Morehead State’s softball team used timely hitting and efficient pitching to defeat Shawnee State 2-0 and 6-0 in a doubleheader at University Field Wednesday afternoon.

The Eagles improved to 10-6 on the season, while the Bears fell to 1-7.

Senior pitcher Katie Pfost struck out 10 en route to a victory in the opener.  Pfost moved to 5-3 on the season and now has a team-leading 54 strikeouts. Senior Ali Thompson suffered the loss for the Bears to fall to 1-3.

Offensively, senior outfielder Elizabeth Wagner and senior shortstop Kayla Ashbrook led the Eagles with a pair of hits and an RBI each in the first contest. Junior second baseman Stephanie Etter also added two hits, while senior outfielder Anna Sommer and junior catcher McKenna Bartko each registered a hit for the Eagles.

MSU put runs on the board in the first and fifth innings via an RBI double from Wagner and a run-producing single from Ashbrook .

The hosts only needed a two-run fourth frame to secure game two. This time Ashbrook and fellow senior Amber Riddle picked up RBIs on doubles to right center.

The Eagles added four runs in the bottom of the sixth off another pair of doubles, this time from freshman designated player Tressa Watson and senior outfielder Sam Woodall. An SSU wild pitch and an outfield miscue led to the other tallies.

Junior Greta Smeins allowed just four hits in four innings of work to improve to 3-2. Junior starter Kelcey McMurray gave the Eagles three innings of scoreless work as well and gave up only one hit.

The Eagles are back in action this weekend with doubleheaders against Ohio Valley Conference opponents SIU Edwardsville and Eastern Illinois. Check MSUEagles.com for schedule updates and live statistics links.
