MOREHEAD, Ky. – The Morehead State softball team dropped a pair of games, 9-4 and 5-2, to Ohio Valley Conference western division foe SIU Edwardsville at University Field on Saturday afternoon.

With the sweep, the Eagles fall to 10-10 and 0-4 in Ohio Valley Conference play, while the Cougars improve to 19-8 and 4-2 in league contests.

SIU Edwardsville scored four runs in the top of the sixth to secure the victory in game one.

Senior Katie Pfost (5-5) suffered the loss in the circle as she surrendered five earned runs off nine hits in 5.1 innings of work. Junior Greta Smeins put in 1.2 innings of work. SIUE freshman lefty Haley Chambers (10-2) earned the win in a complete game effort and registered six strikeouts.

Offensively, senior outfielder Elizabeth Wagner led the Eagles with two hits, which included a two-run home run. Four other players registered hits, while senior Amber Riddle tallied the only other RBI.

SIUE took the initial 1-0 lead in the contest in the top of the first, but the Eagles answered with three runs in the bottom half of the inning off Wagner’s two-run shot and Riddle’s sac fly to left. Both teams were then held scoreless until the Cougars connected on a two-run home run to regain the lead in the top of the fourth.

MSU’s single run to take the lead back in the fourth off an error that scored Wagner was not enough, as the Cougars scored two runs in the fifth and four more in the sixth to earn the win.

In the night cap, the Eagles used a pair of two-out singles from senior outfielder Samantha Woodall and senior shortstop Kayla Ashbrook to take the early lead, but SIUE picked up two runs off of a single up the middle in the seventh to tie the game, and added three more in the eighth pick up the come-from-behind win.

Junior Kelcey McMurray (2-3) pitched seven innings in the loss. She surrendered seven hits and two earned runs while striking out four. Smeins pitched one inning of relief. SIUE’s junior pitcher Erin Greenwalt earned the victory to move to 5-4.

At the plate, Woodall and juniors Stephanie Etter and Jamie Massaro registered a pair of hits.

The Eagles are back in action on Tuesday when they travel to Oxford, Ohio to take on non-conference opponent Miami. First pitch of the doubleheader is scheduled for 2 p.m. ET, and live stats will be available via MSUEagles.com.
