BUIES CREEK, N.C. -- The Morehead State softball team completed the sweep of the Hampton Inn Camel Stampede Tournament with a pair of victories on day two over host Campbell, 1-0, and Norfolk State, 11-1.
MSU moves to 7-5 on the season with the wins on Saturday, while CU falls to 12-8 and NSU slips to 4-12.
MSU continued its streak of putting runs on the board early, as senior Kayla Ashbrook brought home fellow senior Adrena Anderson in the first inning of game one. After a single, Anderson made her way to third on the play, and Ashbrook grounded out to the shortstop to tack on her team-leading 11th RBI.
Senior Katie Post earned her team-leading fourth victory of the season in the complete game. She struck out five to bring her season total to 37.
Ashbrook, Anderson, senior Elizabeth Wagner and sophomore Katie Raile each registered a hit for MSU in the opening contest.
MSU did it again in the second contest, as it pulled off the commanding victory over NSU.
Wagner started things off in the bottom of the first with a broken-bat RBI to score Anderson, and the Eagles tacked on 10 more runs in a third-inning explosion for the 11-1 lead. The inning included Ashbrook’s second home run of the season.
The Eagles finished off the game with flawless defense and went on for the mercy-rule victory.
Anderson, Ashbrook and junior Stephanie Etter all had a pair of hits in the contest, while junior Greta Smeins (2-2) picked up the win. The starter, junior Kelcey McMurray, did two innings of work for the Eagles.
MSU is back in action on Tuesday when it hosts Western Illinois in a doubleheader. First pitch is at 2 p.m. ET. Follow live stats at MSUEagles.com.
