MARTIN, Tenn. – The Morehead State softball team split an Ohio Valley Conference doubleheader with UT Martin on Saturday at Bettye Giles Field. The split moved the Eagles to 19-18 overall and 5-10 in conference play, while the Skyhawks sit at 30-14 and 10-7 in league action.

MSU took game one, 4-0, before dropping the night cap of the twinbill, 5-3.

In the opener, senior Katie Pfost (12-10) picked up the complete-game shutout for the Eagles. It was the lefty’s 15th complete game of the season and her fourth shutout.  Pfost struck out eight and only surrendered three hits in the contest. Sophomore Casey Vincent suffered the loss for the Skyhawks to dip to 12-6 on the season.

“Katie played really well for us today,” Head Coach David Williams said. “She controlled the game, got ahead of batters and got out of situations when she had to.”

At the plate, senior Sam Woodall led the Eagles with a 3-for-4 effort and an RBI in the first contest, and she batted 6-for-8 on the day. Six MSU players registered hits in the first contest.

Senior Adrena Anderson started game one with her second triple of the season, and Woodall delivered an RBI single up the middle.

MSU extended its lead in the seventh inning when senior Elizabeth Wagner hit an RBI single to load the bases. Senior Kayla Ashbrook beat the force out at home and Wagner scored a run on a fielding error.

Pfost and the Eagles were able to keep the Skyhawks hitless until the third inning, and went on to outhit UTM, 8-3, in the contest.

Game two started the same as game one, with a single run for the Eagles in the first inning. MSU plated the run after Wagner reached on an error and Anderson capitalized on the mistake to score. They added another run in the third as senior Amber Riddle hit a single to left field that scored Woodall.

Junior Jamie Massaro got in on the scoring action by hitting her second career home run, and first of the season, over the left center fence in the fourth inning.

The Skyhawks came back in the fourth inning with five unanswered runs off three hits. The flurry included a two-run home run from freshman Deven Wilson, her first career four-bagger.

“I think innings like these are just mental hurdles for us,” Williams added. “We just need to push through them to finish off games.”

Junior Kelcey McMurray (3-6) was saddled with the loss for the Eagles in 3.1 innings of work. She was tagged for four earned runs, surrendered four hits, and struck out three. Pfost pitched 2.2 hitless innings of relief and fanned three.

Woodall was 3-for-4 at the plate in game two, while Anderson added a pair of hits.

“Sam did a great job and came up with some big hits for us today,” Williams said. “She was able to get a lot going for us.”

The Eagles are back in action on Sunday when they travel to Cape Girardeau, Mo., to take on OVC opponent Southeast Missouri.

“We played well today, and against a good Jacksonville State team last weekend,” Williams said. “Both are top teams in the conference, so that should give us the confidence to play anyone in the league moving forward.”

First pitch is slated for 1 p.m. ET, and Live stats can be found at MSUEagles.com.
