MOREHEAD, Ky. -- Junior middle blocker Cody Dodd and freshman outside hitter Kellie Williams combined for 29 kills to lift the Tennessee Tech volleyball team to a 23-25, 25-20, 30-28, 25-19 Ohio Valley Conference victory over Morehead State on Friday night at Wetherby Gym.
The Golden Eagles improve to 9-14 overall, 4-3 in league action and 2-7 on the road. The Eagles fall to 0-21 overall, 0-7 in conference play and 0-10 at home. Morehead State still holds a 65-17 all-time advantage against TTU. MSU had previously won eight straight in the series.
"Give Tennessee Tech credit because they're a quality team," Head Coach Jaime Gordon said. "I'm disappointed with the loss, but proud of the way our team continues to fight. Our young ladies continue to work hard every day. They are classy and have a lot of character."
Dodd drilled a match-best 15 kills. She also collected 10 digs and four blocks. Williams smacked 14 winners and hit .464. Sophomore setter Sharon Anderson tallied a match-high 46 assists plus five blocks for the Golden Eagles, while senior libero Courtney Smith notched 16 digs.
Senior middle blocker Laura McDermott registered 14 kills, while junior middle blocker Hannah Sigala collected a match-high seven blocks and 14 winners. Sophomore libero Hope Rillema added a match-best 23 digs for the Eagles, while sophomore middle blocker Sydney Schuler tallied 12 kills.
"I thought we had several good offensive performances against a team that blocks well," Gordon said. "Hannah had a nice attack percentage (.455) and was effective for us in the blocking department. Sydney took some really aggressive swings, and we hope that continues moving forward."
Morehead State posted five aces, but committed 10 service errors. Tennessee Tech had three serves that could not be returned and gave away five points in that category. TTU hit .254 for the match, while MSU checked in at .207. The Golden Eagles also had an 11-9 edge in team blocks.
"We wanted to put some pressure on Tennessee Tech with our serve," Gordon added. "I thought we were up and down in that area. We had some serves that got them out of system, but also gave them some easy sideouts with our serve. You never want to give away 10 points like we did tonight."
Morehead State closes out its conference weekend on Saturday against Jacksonville State. First serve from Wetherby Gym is set for 2 p.m. ET. The contest will be streamed live and free of charge on the OVC Digital Network, with former college player and coach Angela McGuire calling the action.
