No. 19 Rifle Improves to 2-0 With Win Over Columbus State

MOREHEAD, Ky. -- The No. 19 Morehead State rifle team, under the direction of first-year Head Coach Alan Joseph, improved to 2-0 on the season with a 4,568-4,537 victory over No. 18 Columbus State on Saturday at Button Rifle Range.  Both programs compete in the Ohio Valley Conference for rifle.

Morehead State took the top five spots in smallbore.  Senior Ethan Cole, who qualified for the 2014 NCAA Championship, won the competition with a 576.  Junior Russell Smith fired a 571, while freshman Dan Hall posted a 570, freshman Joe Fischer also tallied a 570 and freshman Seth Baker turned in a 561.

Columbus State junior Jay Cross took first in the air rifle competition with a 586.  Cole and CSU sophomore Marko Maksimovic tied for second with 584s, while Fischer finished fourth with a 578 and CSU sophomore Marissa Furney closed out fifth with a 577.  Cole posted the best aggregate score with a 1,160.

Cole established a personal best in air rifle, while Smith recorded his career best in both aggregate score and smallbore.

Morehead State has six competitions before the semester break.  The Eagles return to action on Saturday when they host conference foe UT Martin.
