MOREHEAD, Ky. -- Morehead State's student-athletes recorded a 3.19 cumulative grade point average during the fall semester, while 14 athletic programs posted better than a 3.00 GPA and 33 individuals earned a 4.00 GPA. The figures encompass 290 student-athletes who participated in NCAA-sponsored sports this past semester.
"Congratulations to all of the student-athletes and teams on their academic accomplishments this semester," Assistant Athletic Director for Student-Athlete Services and Senior Woman Administrator Sara Larson said. "Their hard work in the classroom is reflected by their grades. Graduation is a goal for all of our student-athletes, and with their performance this semester, they are headed in the right direction."
Morehead State was identified by the NCAA in 2012 as one of six institutions to be part of a three-year pilot program aimed to increased student-athlete academic performance. The Eagles are receiving $360,000 from the NCAA during a three-year span. The university is also contributing $180,000, which pushes the total to $540,000.
"Each student-athlete is ultimately responsible for their individual academic record, and it is all of their hard work that has earned such a high GPA for the athletic department this fall," Larson said. "I continue to be impressed with the dedication this group of student-athletes has to academics and am proud of each of them."
All Morehead State student-athletes have access to the EAGLE Center. The facility features 7,000 square feet of space, dedicated to computer labs, learning labs and study space. The center has wireless internet, seating for 110 student-athletes and 30 computers. It also houses several offices for coaches and academic support staff.
"The EAGLE Center is a wonderful facility," Larson added. "We have four primary academic staff members who work with our student-athletes daily, and we have plenty of space for them to study. Academics have been a priority in the time I've been at Morehead State (since 2002), and I'm really ecstatic our GPAs are reflecting that."
