COOKEVILLE, Tenn. -- The Tennessee Tech women's basketball team used a 27-8 scoring run over both halves Saturday night and held on to defeat Morehead State, 71-58, at the Eblen Center.
TTU improved to 10-15 overall, 7-5 in the Ohio Valley Conference and 7-3 at home. MSU, which dropped its eighth contest in the last 10, slipped to 10-15 overall and 4-8 in the league.
Diamond Henderson led five TTU players reaching double figures with 16 points. Molly Heady nailed all four of her three-pointers and scored 14. Hannah Goolsby finished with 13, while Candace Parson tallied 12. Kayla Brewer had 10 points, a game-high 12 rebounds and six blocked shots.
Senior guard Shanice Parker led the Eagles with a career-best 15 points and three assists, while freshman guard Aaliyah Wells notched 12 for her fourth straight double-figure output. Junior guard Almesha Jones scored 11 first-half points before exiting with an injury.
"We were short-handed tonight, but I commend our younger players," Head Coach Tom Hodges said. "Several of our freshmen and sophomores played more than they are used to, but they also gave us some quality minutes. It was a tough spot to be in."
The Eagles hit 44 percent (12-of-27) in the first half but was limited to just 29 percent (6-of-21) in the final period. TTU finished at 48 percent (25-of-52) for the night.
MSU used a 10-0 run midway through the first half to gain momentum. After a 5-0 burst to start the game, MSU led 8-6 before Tay Couch ignited the run with a running jumper. MSU led 18-8 at the 11:57 following a Wells' triple.
MSU pushed its lead to 24-11 after a Natalie Greenwell three-pointer with 9:35 left, but the Golden Eagles outscored MSU 21-7 to end the opening half with a 32-31 advantage.
Tech, which opened the second half with a 6-1 flurry, increased its lead to six midway through the second half before Morehead State rallied to cut it to 55-52 at the 8:54 mark. However, the hosts went on a 9-0 run to distance themselves for the win. TTU finished the contest on a 16-6 spurt.
TTU out-rebounded the Eagles 41-28, including 15 offensive boards.
The Eagles continue their conference road trip Monday at Jacksonville State. Game time at Pete Mathews Coliseum is set for 6:30 p.m. ET.
