MOREHEAD, Ky. – Morehead State Athletics has announced a sports medicine partnership with Timothy Kremchek, M.D., and his staff at Beacon Orthopaedics in Cincinnati. Kremchek will serve as Morehead State's senior orthopaedic consultant.
Kremchek and his staff of fellows will provide weekly training room visits to Morehead State for evaluations and to care for student-athletes in post-operation status. In addition, MSU will have full access to the services provided at Beacon's Summit Woods facility in Ohio, which includes surgical capabilities. Kremchek primarily works from the Summit Woods location.
The Beacon staff will work closely with Thomas Fossett, M.D., of St. Claire Regional Medical Center in Morehead, who will remain in his long-time role as MSU's team physician.
"Having worked with Dr. Kremchek for the last 15 years dating back to my time with the Cincinnati Reds, I know the level of commitment and care he will provide us is second to none," MSU Assistant Athletic Director and Director of Sports Medicine Chris Lapole, MA, ATC, CSA, said. "Having Dr. Fossett and Dr. Kremchek working together gives us what I believe is one of the best orthopedic teams in Division I athletics. Dr. Kremchek and his medical team provide care to the highest level of professional athletes in all of the four major sports, plus Olympians, and we are honored now that he will provide that same level of care to the student-athletes in all of our sports."
Kremchek is in his 18
th season as the Cincinnati Reds medical director and chief orthopaedic surgeon. A 1986 graduate of the University of Cincinnati College of Medicine, Kremchek completed his orthopaedic residency at Tufts University in Boston. In 1993, he completed a one-year Orthopaedic Sports Medicine Fellowship at the Alabama Sports Medicine Institute in Birmingham under the direction of Dr. James Andrews and Dr. Lawrence Lemak. He began private practice in Cincinnati in 1993.
Kremchek has been featured on HBO's Real Sports program regarding youth baseball injuries. He has also been featured in
ESPN Magazine,
Sports Illustrated and
USA Today.
"This is a wonderful partnership with Morehead State Athletics that makes sense at this time," Kremchek said. "Working with Dr. Fossett, I know our staff at Beacon can provide Morehead State student-athletes with the best care possible. We have a wide range of specialists and fellows who work alongside me, so whatever care is necessary, there is someone on our staff with the knowledge and expertise to provide the best medical services and advice for these athletes."
Beacon Orthopaedics & Sports Medicine was founded in 1996 as a multi-physician practice providing orthopaedic care to the Cincinnati community. The practice has since grown into a nationally known and respected provider of orthopaedic care with five convenient locations in the Greater Cincinnati area. Beacon's Board Certified and Fellowship trained physicians, together with almost 400 medical and customer service professionals, deliver quality care to professional and student athletes as well as the general public.
Beacon provides medical services to the Cincinnati Reds and several other colleges and high schools in the southwestern Ohio, southeastern Indiana and northern Kentucky.
"We are constantly evaluating ways to enhance the experience and protect the welfare of our student-athletes," MSU Director of Athletics Brian Hutchinson said. "Providing world-class medical coverage is one of the ways we know will improve the lives of all our student-athletes, and a partnership with Beacon Orthopaedics makes tremendous sense for MSU Athletics. Dr. Kremchek and his staff are universally considered leaders in this field and having their sincere interest in and support of Eagle Athletics gives us another partnership to advance our goals. We will always seek the best medical care available, and in partnering with our long-time team physician, Dr. Fossett, we believe the team is awfully strong."
Lapole is in his third season on the sports medicine staff at MSU. He was promoted to assistant athletic director and director of sports medicine in August 2012 after serving as assistant athletic trainer in 2011-12. The sports medicine staff also includes Kelly Mason, ATC, David Anderson, MA, ATC, and several graduate assistants and students.
