MURRAY, Ky. -- The Murray State softball team tallied 21 hits and jumped out to early leads in both of Sunday's contests en route to a doubleheader sweep of Morehead State at Racer Field. Murray State posted an 8-0 win in a five-inning opener and 6-0 victory in game two.
The Racers, who have won five consecutive affairs and nine of their last 12, improve to 22-12 overall, 9-5 in the Ohio Valley Conference and 7-2 at home. The Eagles, who drop three of their four weekend decisions, slip to 13-18 overall, 4-7 in league play and 4-8 on the road.
Murray State collected 11 hits in game one and 10 in game two. The Racers' top five batters combined for 16 base knocks. Murray State recorded one double, triple and home run in each contest. Senior center fielder Mo Ramsey led the way with a 5-for-7 performance and four runs.
Senior right-hander CheyAnne Gaskey (11-6) and sophomore right-hander Mason Robinson (10-3) hurled complete-game shutouts. Gaskey walked two and scattered six hits while striking out five in five innings. Robinson yielded just one hit and two walks while fanning eight in seven frames.
Sophomore Kayla McGuffey saw her career-best hitting streak end at 11 contests. She posted a 2-for-3 effort in game one and was the only Eagle to register more than one base knock on the day.
Freshman right-hander Mackenzie Grossmann, who allowed four earned runs and seven hits in 1.2 innings, fell to 8-6 with the game-one loss. Sophomore right-hander Megan Tymorek, who yielded four earned runs and six base knocks in three frames, slipped to 0-7 with the game-two defeat.
Senior right-hander Tanna Seuferer worked three innings out of the Morehead State bullpen in the nightcap and allowed just one run. Tymorek added 2.1 scoreless innings of relief in the opener.
MSU opens a nine-game homestand on Tuesday with a 2 p.m. ET doubleheader against Atlantic 10 Conference opponent Dayton. The Eagles are also slated to play two games against Northern Kentucky, three versus Belmont and two against Wright State.
