Eagles host UT Martin on Saturday night

MOREHEAD, Ky. - The Morehead State men's basketball team looks to make it two straight wins when they host UT Martin on Saturday night. Tip-off is set for 6 p.m. ET.

The Eagles (7-7) had lost six of their last seven games prior to downing Southeast Missouri on Thursday night at Johnson Arena, 96-69.

In the win over SEMO, Morehead State dominated throughout and, after jumping out to a 16-2 lead, never led by fewer than eight points. They notched several season highs in the victory - points (96), assists (29), field goals made (41), field goal percentage (54.7%), and three-point field goal percentage (55.6%). They nearly set season highs with 10 made three-pointers and 14 steals.

The Eagles assisted on 29 of 41 made field goals, good for 71 percent. Eleven players scored and five players finished in double figures.

Senior guard Brent Arrington and junior guard Corban Collins shot a combined 12-of-17 from the floor and 7-of-8 from three-point range. Arrington scored a season-high 21 points, while shooting 8-of-11 overall and 4-of-5 from three, and chipped in six steals, five assists, and five rebounds. Collins added 11 points, shooting 4-of-6 from the floor, 3-of-3 from deep, and dished out six assists.

Collins leads MSU with 12.1 points, 3.6 assists and 32.1 minutes per game. His plus/minus (measurement of team points scored versus points allowed when player is on the floor) is +103, which ranks second on the team. He has scored in double digits in 10 of 14 games.

The Eagles have a rebounding advantage of +5.1 on the season. Forty percent of the rebounds are of the offensive variety, good for 14.6 per game, which ranks 15th in the country. They are averaging 14.0 second chance points per game. In eight of 14 games, they have outrebounded their opponent by six or more rebounds.

In the win on Thursday night, they outrebounded the Redhawks, 39-33, outscored them in the paint, 52-28, and had 26 second chance points to UTM's 12.

The Skyhawks are 9-7 on the year and 1-0 in OVC play. They started off the year at 0-4 and 2-7, but have won seven straight. Just one of their wins, and none of their last seven, have come against RPI top-150 schools and that was their win at James Madison, 78-75. They have the fourth best RPI in the OVC at 203. Their lone common opponent with Morehead State is Saint Louis,and they won at SLU, 82-76.

Four players average double figures for the Skyhawks,and they are led by senior forward Twymond Howard, who averages a team-high 12.8 points and 6.9 boards.

Morehead State owns a 33-14 all-time advantage against UT Martin. The Eagles have won 10 of 11 and had defeated UTM nine straight times until the Skyhawks managed a 75-72 overtime win on Jan. 10 at the Elam Center a year ago. The Eagles then returned the favor by downing the Skyhawks, 76-65, in the second round of the OVC Tournament.
