MOREHEAD, Ky. – Morehead State women's basketball picked up its first win of the season by way of a 78-73 defeat of Eastern Michigan in the Donna Murphy Classic.
"Give our girls a lot of credit," said head coach
Greg Todd. "We knew it was going to be a tough game. We battled from the opening tip, and it was a great game all in all."
The Eagles were led by senior
Shay Steele, who was named the contest's Most Valuable Player. The 6-foot-2 forward scored a game-high 20 points on 9-for-14 shooting, recording six rebounds and three assists in the process.
"
Shay Steele had one of the best overall games of her career," Todd said. "Once she gets some confidence, she really explodes. She did a great job."
Sunday marked the 2016-17 debut of Preseason All-Ohio Valley Conference performer
Brianna McQueen, who finished with 11 points, eight assists, and four rebounds before fouling out after 22 minutes. Freshman reserve
Breuna Jackson shared ball handling duties with McQueen, chronicling 19 points, four rebounds, and two assists.
"For a freshman, you can't really say enough about Breuna," said Todd. "I think having her and (McQueen) in the game made the difference for us."
Morehead State held Eastern Michigan to just 28.6 percent shooting, and committed only nine turnovers on the offensive end.
"Our girls are getting smarter on the court with more experience," Todd said. "We did a really nice job contesting shots. It was a good game for us."
The Eagles will conclude the Donna Murphy Classic on Tuesday, Nov. 15 when Alice Lloyd (Ky.) visits Johnson Arena at 12 p.m. ET.
