Women's basketball comes up short at No. 16 West Virginia

Box Score

MORGANTOWN, W. Va. – Morehead State (5-3) dropped a 94-53 decision to No. 16 West Virginia (8-0) on Wednesday night at WVU Coliseum in Morgantown, W. Va.

"Initially, our defense was very good," said head coach Greg Todd. "We hustled and kept playing all the way through."

Wednesday marked the Eagles' second road matchup with a nationally ranked opponent in the last four games. Morehead State fell to then-No. 20 Kentucky on Nov. 23, but rattled off back-to-back wins over Chicago State and Kentucky Christian in preparation for the season's first road trip outside the Commonwealth of Kentucky.

"We knew going in that West Virginia's talent level is even better than Kentucky's," Todd said. "Disappointing all in all, but we did have some bright spots."

With 15 points and six rebounds, senior Shay Steele led the Eagles in a starting effort versus West Virginia. Sophomore guard Miranda Crockett tallied 18 points and four rebounds, while junior Eriel McKee logged three points and 12 boards.

"Shay was a hard matchup because of her speed," said Todd. "She had a good game."

Morehead State returns to Johnson Arena for a 12 p.m. tip-off with Lipscomb (1-6) on Saturday. The Eagles defeated the Bisons 92-77 in Nashville last season. Saturday's game will be broadcast live on the OVC Digital Network.
