MOREHEAD, Ky. - After wrapping up its home schedule on Wednesday, Morehead State volleyball closes the regular season with three straight matches on the road, beginning at Austin Peay (21-9, 10-3) on Saturday afternoon at 2 p.m. ET.
The Eagles enter the final three-match stretch with an 11-16 overall record and a 7-6 record in league play, alone in fifth place.Â
"The middle part of October, we call that the 'October hump', it's that press through being tired and having midterms and all of that, and that's also when you start to see teams start to separate themselves a bit. Then you hit the 'November press', that's the finish where you have to really kick it into high gear. The next step for us is making sure that we finish strong and take advantage of every opportunity to get better," said Gordon.
Winners of two of their last three, and four of their last seven matches, the Eagles are looking to build more momentum as they head towards postseason play.
"We've got to put some of these last pieces in place. Consistency is a critical part for us, especially as we get closer to the OVC Tournament where it's about winning three in a row," said head coach
Jaime Gordon.
The Eagles continue to control the net as they rank second in the OVC with 265 blocks on the year.
In the loss to EKU on Wednesday, sophomore
Maddie Fella set a program record with 11 block assists. But, after winning the first two sets and recording ten blocks in the process, they managed just 4.5 blocks the rest of the way as they fell in five sets. Morehead State also had three players finish with double digit kills in the loss, led by senior
Sydney Schuler, who finished with a career-high 19.
But, they also finished with 12 service errors and nine receiving errors, opening the door for the Colonels.
"We had 64 kills against EKU, but we also had 34 errors. When you look at their ten blocks, that's 24 unforced errors. With that many, it's hard to win and that's something we need to address moving forward," said Gordon.
