GM1 GM2KENNESAW, Ga. - The Morehead State softball team held on to defeat Rutgers, 6-5, and then fell to Bowling Green, 11-1, in their second and third games of the Phyllis Rafter Memorial Tournament at Kennesaw State University.
With the split, their record moves to 5-2 on the young season.
In the win over Rutgers, the Eagles trailed 4-3 going into the bottom of the third inning, but got two runs in the third to take the lead and then extended that lead to 6-4 with another run in the fourth.
Freshman
Allison Rager, who entered the game in the third inning, allowed a run on a sacrifice fly in the seventh, but induced a fly out to end the game.
Rager (3-0) picked up the win for the Eagles, allowing four hits, two earned runs, and three walks in five innings of work.
The Morehead State offense recorded ten hits, all singles and a double by sophomore
Hannah Murphy. Murphy was one of three Eagles to finish with a multi-hit game, joined by freshmen
Ellen Barrett and
Aubrey Bennett.
"That was a big win for us to get one over a quality Big Ten program," said head coach
David Williams. "Our offense got us rolling and Allison (Rager) gave us quality innings in the circle."
In the second game, Morehead State got on the board first with an RBI single by sophomore
Lindsay Ward, but Bowling Green responded with 11 unanswered runs to down the Eagles, 11-1.
MSU managed just five hits in the game and did not record an extra-base hit. Ward was the lone Eagle to finish with two hits.
Sophomore
Mackenzie Grossmann (1-1) took the loss after allowing six hits and five earned runs in 4.2 innings of work. She walked two and struck out six.
"We had a bit of a letdown in game two after a big win this morning," said Williams. "We will get refocused and be ready to go tomorrow."
