Samudio shines as Men's Tennis takes down Toledo, 5-2

Box Score

TOLEDO, Ohio - Morehead State men's tennis notched a 5-2 victory over Toledo on Friday afternoon at the Varsity Tennis Courts.

The win marks the first of the season for the Eagles (1-5). The loss moves the Rockets to 7-8, bringing them below the .500-mark for the first time since early February.

"I was really proud of the effort from this team," said head coach Kevin Fulton. "We really put a lot of work in the last two weeks and it showed today."

The day began with aggressive play in doubles competition as the Eagles swept the Rockets, 3-0. Junior Ritchie Kruunenberg and senior Gabriel Ruiz took down the team of Stjepan Sisko and Luka Vitosevic, 6-5, in a highly contested back-and-forth match. Sophomore Sebastian Penaloza and freshman Ognjen Sunjevaric defeated the team of Juan Carranza and Danilo Pejovic, 6-3, while the senior tandem of Nick Mercer and Enrique Samudio rounded out doubles play with a decisive 6-1 win over Vince Anzalone and Stephen Miller.

"Our doubles play was outstanding," said Fulton. "Getting Sebastian (Penaloza) back was a big lift and it carried over into singles competition."

In singles play, Penaloza defeated Pejovic in straight sets (7-6, 6-2). Samudio and Miller split the first two sets, but Samudio regained momentum and took the third and deciding set, 6-3.

After falling in the first set, Sunjevari battled back late to win the second set, 7-6, and then shut out Carranza in the third to win the match.

"I can't say enough about our leadership in this program from Enrique (Samudio), Nick (Mercer), and Garrett (Mandrell). This is just the beginning; I really believe in these young men," said Fulton.

Morehead State faces Wake Forest in Winston-Salem, N.C. on Sunday at 5 p.m. ET.
