Men's Tennis opens OVC schedule with a 6-1 victory

Box Score

MOREHEAD, Ky.— Morehead State men's tennis began its Ohio Valley Conference season with a 6-1 victory against rival Murray State on Friday afternoon at Sadler Courts.

The Eagles have now won two of their last three matches, improving their record to 2-6 and 1-0 in the conference. The Racers have dropped four straight matches, moving their record to 2-11 and 0-1 in the OVC.

"The guys are starting to click on all cylinders," said Head Coach Kevin Fulton. "Ritchie (Krunnenberg), Gabriel (Ruiz), Enrique (Samudio), and Sebastian (Penaloza) played at a high-level in singles play and our doubles are really starting to come together."

In doubles play Morehead State swept its way through, winning the first two matches 6-0 and 6-3, with the third going unfinished but with a 6-5 advantage. The tandem of sophomore Sabastian Penaloza and freshman Ognjen Sunjevaric collected their third straight win as a team with a 6-0 victory against Will True and Srdjan Trosic.

Morehead State took five of six matches in singles play, highlighted by the play of senior Gabriel Ruiz. In straight sets, Ruiz defeated True 6-4, 7-6. The win for Ruiz gave him his third of the season and his second in the last three.

"I'm really looking forward to this conference schedule and showing our team that the schedule we put them through has prepared them," said Fulton.

It'll be a quick turnaround for Morehead State as they welcome in Austin Peay on Saturday afternoon at Sadler Courts.
