Softball Eagles open OVC play this weekend at Belmont

MOREHEAD, Ky. - After splitting home games against Eastern Michigan and Toledo, the Morehead State softball team opens OVC play at Belmont this weekend.

The Eagles play at 3 and 5 p.m. ET on Saturday, and 2 p.m. ET on Sunday.

Morehead State opens OVC play with a 10-9 record. They are batting .298 on the year and averaging 5.0 runs per game. Their team era is 5.51.

In their ten wins, they have scored 79 runs, but in their nine losses, they have scored 16 runs. 

Offensively, they are led by catcher Robyn Leighton, the two-time OVC Player of the Week. She leads the team in batting average (.444), runs (16), hits (20), doubles (5), home runs (5), total bases (40), and slugging percentage (.889). Shortstop Karly Thompson ranks second on the team with a .348 batting average and is tied with Leighton for the team-lead in home runs with five.

Overall, the Eagles have seven players batting over .300 on the season - Dana Hutchins (.333), Lizzy Margagliotti (.333), Tressa Watson (.320), Hannah Murphy (.317), Kayla McGuffey (.311).

Morehead State received two complete game pitching performances against Toledo on Wednesday. Mackenzie Grossmann picked up the loss in the first game despite pitching a season-high 8.0 innings and allowing just three runs, only one of which was earned. Allison Rager followed by pitching the first shutout of her career in the win. She went 7.0 innings, allowing just three hits, while striking out three and walking none.

Grossmann is now 3-4 on the year with a 4.46 era, while Rager is 5-2 with a 4.86 era.

Belmont is 7-17 on the year and 4-1 at home.
