NASHVILLE, Tenn.-- Morehead State men's tennis outdueled host Belmont in a 4-3 victory at the Centennial Sportsplex on Saturday afternoon.
The Eagles (5-7, 4-0) remain undefeated against OVC foes and have won four of their last five matches. The Bruins (5-8, 1-3) continued to stumble out of the gate against OVC competition, losing three of their first four matches in the conference.
Morehead State struck first, claiming the first point of the day in doubles play, and it proved to be the deciding mark of the contest.
Junior
Ritchie Kruunenberg and
Gabriel Ruiz stayed undefeated in doubles play with a 6-1 win over Cedric Dujacquier and Robin Demasse. Senior
Enrique Samudio and sophomore Sebastian Penaloza combined for a 6-4 defeat of Stephen Goldman and Zak Kahn.
Singles play was split at three wins apiece, leading to the 4-3 victory for the Eagles. Ruiz won his fourth straight OVC match with a 6-4, 6-3 defeat of Demasse.
Senior
Nick Mercer continued to play at a high rate, winning in straight sets 7-6, 6-3 over Kahn.
Penaloza picked up the third win in singles play in a high-spirited three-set affair against Goldman. Penaloza claimed victory in the first set 6-3. Goldman rallied to even the match with a 6-4 second-set win. The door closed on Goldman as Penaloza finished the third set with a 6-3 win.
Next up will be Friday afternoon match on the road at Tennessee Tech at 1 p.m. ET.
