JACKSONVILLE, Ala. - Sophomore
Mackenzie Grossmann pitched pitch-for-pitch with Jacksonville State's Whitney Gillespie through the first three innings, but the Gamecocks scored runs in the fourth, fifth, and sixth innings as the Eagles fell 8-0 in the finale of their three-game series at JSU.
The Gamecocks won all three games of the series and remain unbeaten in OVC play. Morehead State falls to 20-20 overall and 7-8 in league play. They have lost seven of their last eight OVC games and their record falls below .500 in league play for the first time this season.
Through the first three innings, the offenses managed just one hit combined, a single by JSU's Jordan Bullock in the third.
After the Gamecocks took the lead with two runs in the bottom of the fourth, the Eagles threatened in the fifth.
Dana Hutchins led off the inning with a double and it marked MSU's first hit against Gillespie after 11 innings.
Hannah Murphy then followed with a one-out single and the Eagles had runners on first and third with one out. But,
Lizzy Margagliotti grounded out to the pitcher and
Tressa Watson struck out to end the threat.Â
Jacksonville State's Emily Church then delivered a solo shot in the fifth and a three-run shot in the sixth, as the Eagles fell, 8-0.
Grossmann (7-12, 3.36) recorded the loss for the Eagles after allowing three hits and two earned runs in 3.1 innings. She walked four and struck out one.
Gillespie picked up the win and her second shutout in as many days against Morehead State. She allowed two hits and two walks, while striking out three.
The Eagles return home next weekend to face UT Martin and Southeast Missouri in two-game sets. They will face the Skyhawks at 12 and 2 p.m. ET on Saturday and the Redhawks on Sunday at 12 and 2 p.m. ET.
