Dayton, Ohio -
Kayla McGuffey recorded two hits, but it wasn't enough as the Eagles fell 4-2 at Wright State on Tuesday afternoon.
With the loss, Morehead State falls to 23-22 on the season, while WSU improves to 32-18.
The Eagles threatened in the first inning as
Tressa Watson and McGuffey led off the game with back-to-back singles. But, after a failed sacrifice bunt, a flyout, and a groundout, they were unable to scratch across an early run.Â
Wright State then responded with solo runs in the first and second innings. They scored on a two-out error by pitcher
Mackenzie Grossmann in the first and then added another run in the second on a two-out single.
In the fifth inning, Morehead State trimmed the lead to 2-1. Just as they did in the first inning, the Eagles led off the inning with back-to-back singles, this time from
Aubrey Bennett and McGuffey. Following a successful sacrifice bunt by
Dana Hutchins,
Robyn Leighton then drove in Bennett on a sacrifice fly to cut the lead in half.
The Raiders added two more runs in the bottom of the fifth to extend the lead back to 4-1.
The Eagles scratched an unearned run across in the seventh inning to trim the lead to 4-2, but Leighton flied out with a runner on to end the game.
Grossmann (8-14) picked up the loss after allowing six hits and four runs, just two of which were earned, in 4.1 innings. She walked one and struck out one.
Morehead State had seven hits to the Raiders' six and were led by McGuffey, who finished 2-for-4 with a run scored.
Next up, the Eagles hit the road for a three-game set at Tennessee Tech this weekend. They will play at 1 and 3 p.m. ET on Saturday and then wrap up the series on Sunday at 1:00 p.m. ET.
