COOKEVILLE, Tenn. - Morehead State softball fell in both contests at Tennessee Tech on Saturday afternoon. They led 3-2 going into the seventh inning in game one before falling 4-3 and then lost 6-3 in game two despite outhitting the Golden Eagles, 11-6.
In the two losses,
Kayla McGuffey and
Dana Hutchins combined for nine hits.
The Eagles move to 23-24 on the season and 10-11 in league play, while TTU improves to 21-29 and 11-12.
In game one, McGuffey went 3-for-4 with three singles and ignited a two-out rally in the top of the third, which gave the Eagles an early 2-0 lead.
Following McGuffey's single, Hutchins and
Robyn Leighton delivered back-to-back RBI doubles. Morehead State had a chance to get more, but
Hannah Murphy struck out looking with the bases loaded.
After threatening against
Mackenzie Grossmann in the third and fourth innings, TTU scratched across an unearned run in the fifth, but Morehead State answered with an insurance run of their own as
Ellen Barrett scored on a wild pitch to extend the lead to 3-1.
Tennessee Tech added another single run in the sixth, setting up the dramatics in the seventh inning.
With two outs and a runner on first, Murphy committed an error on a hard hit ground ball and runners advanced to first and third.
The Eagles then went to their bullpen and brought in reigning OVC Pitcher of the Week,
Allison Rager. On her second pitch, Rager was called for an illegal pitch, which allowed both runners to advance and tied the game. TTU's Gabby Lasala then singled to left field to score the winning run as Tennessee Tech downed Morehead State in walk-off fashion.
Despite the solid performance, Grossmann (8-15) picked up the loss. She pitched 6.2 innings, allowing seven hits and four runs, just one of which was earned. She walked four and struck out four.
Morehead State committed four errors in the contest, three of which were by Murphy.
In game two, the Eagles outhit Tennessee Tech, but fell 6-3.
They built a 2-1 lead after
Laine Simmons delivered a two-out single to score
Karly Thompson in the top of the fourth.
But, Tennessee Tech responded with five runs in the bottom half of the inning. Following a leadoff walk, TTU's Leigh Thomas delivered a two-run home run to right field. They then added three more runs on two RBI singles.
Morehead State got a run back in the top of the fifth, but would not get closer.
Rager (12-6) picked up the loss after allowing four hits and four earned runs in 3.0 innings. She walked five and struck out two.
McGuffey went 2-for-4 and finished 5-for-8 on the day. Hutchins finished 3-for-4 in game two and 4-for-7 in both games.
