EDWARDSVILLE, Ill. - Morehead State softball fell 2-1 in game one before downing SIUE 6-2 in game two in Edwardsville, Ill. on Saturday afternoon.
With the split, the Eagles move to 20-17 on the year and 7-5 in OVC play, keeping pace with the Cougars, who are also 7-5 in the OVC.
"We had two solid pitching performances today," said Head Coach
David Williams. "Unfortunately we couldn't score enough runs in game one. We came out swinging in game two and provided the run support we needed."
In game one, the Eagles built an early 1-0 lead when senior
Lizzy Margagliotti walked and later scored on a wild pitch, but SIUE rallied for two runs in the fifth. The Cougars two-run inning was aided by an error by Morehead State centerfielder
Kayla McGuffey. McGuffey later lined into a double play in the top of the seventh to end the game.
Sophomore Mackenzie Grossman (7-10) picked up the loss for the Eagles after pitching all six innings and allowing two runs on two hits. She walked seven and struck out five.
McGuffey finished the game 2-for-3 with a walk.
In the second game, the Eagles fell behind 1-0, but scored runs in the third, fourth, fifth, and sixth innings to seal the 6-2 victory.
Freshman
Allison Rager (10-4) recorded the victory, allowing seven hits and two runs in seven innings of work. She struck out three and walked none.
Morehead State recorded 15 hits in the win, led by junior
Karly Thompson, who finished 3-for-3 with a double, a home run, two runs and two runs batted in.
Aubrey Bennett,
Dana Hutchins,
Hannah Murphy, and Margagliotti all finished with two-hit games.
The Eagles travel to Eastern Illinois tomorrow and face the Panthers at 1 and 3 p.m. ET.
