Matt Anderson picked in MLB Draft by the Pittsburgh Pirates

MOREHEAD. Ky. – Morehead State senior righthander Matt Anderson was selected Friday night in the 10th round of the Major League Baseball First-Year Player Draft by the Pittsburgh Pirates organization.

He becomes the 27th athlete in the history of the program to be taken in the MLB Draft. MSU has now had draft picks in back-to-back seasons with Kane Sweeney (New York Yankees) and Brandon Rawe (Miami Marlins) being picked in 2015. Anderson is the first-ever MSU player drafted by the Pirates' organization. He was the 315th overall pick in the draft.

Anderson was also drafted higher than any MSU player since former pitcher Jon Rauch was taken in the third round in 1999 and is only the seventh player in program history to be taken in the top-10 rounds.

"I'm extremely happy for Matt," said MSU head coach Mike McGuire. "He's worked hard to put himself on the draft radar.  He had one of the greatest years in MSU history for us this year. You cannot ask for better representation of MSU than Matt exhibited on and off the field over his career, and now he gets to represent MSU on the professional level."

With a fastball touching the mid-90s, Anderson was named First-Team All-Ohio Valley Conference this year, ranking second in the league with a school single-season record 130 strikeouts. He led all starters with a 2.85 earned run average and posted an 8-3 record. Opponents only managed a .222 batting average against him in 15 starts. He had six double-digit strikeout games, including a career-high 16 versus Tennessee Tech.

Anderson led the nation in strikeouts per nine innings for much of the year and currently ranks second (12.76). He led the Eagles in strikeouts all four seasons in an Eagle uniform.

In the MSU record book, he now ranks fourth in single-season wins (8) and third in single-season strikeouts per nine innings (12.82). On the career charts, he ranks second in strikeouts (321) and games started (44), third in innings pitched (283.2) and fifth in strikeouts per innings (10.20).
