MOREHEAD, Ky. - Morehead State volleyball downed Coppin State in four sets before falling to Kent State in three sets in the Comfort Inn-vitational at Wetherby Gym.
With the split, Morehead State's record moves to 4-8.
In the first match, after splitting the first two sets, the Eagles cruised to wins in sets three and four to seal the victory. They outhit Coppin State .231 to .032 and recorded 54 kills to their 24.
"This morning, it was a little up and down for us. I thought Coppin State did a nice job of fighting and scrapping and that really showed in the second set," said head coach
Jaime Gordon. "After not allowing ourselves many opportunities in the second set, I felt really good about the way we came back in the third set and really took charge and was able to hold on."Â
Sophomore
Merideth Jewell led the team with 13 kills and senior
Sydney Schuler came on strong late to finish with 12 kills, while hitting .269. Freshman
Karlee Reynolds hit .412 and finished with eight kills, four block assists, and a block solo, while sophomore
Jessie Wachtman hit .353 with nine kills.
Sophomore
Jordan Jones led the team with 26 assists and had eight digs and five kills. Freshman
Danielle McCarson led the Eagles with 16 digs.
In the second match, senior Hope Rilemma's ace tied it at 18-18 in the third set, but Kent State scored seven of the next ten points as the Eagles fell in three straight. Morehead State fought during each set, but couldn't get over the hump.
Schuler and Wachtman led the way with nine kills each as Wachtman hit a team-best .312. Jones finished with a team-high 21 assists.
"Tonight was a little bit of a disappointment from an offensive standpoint," said Gordon. "We had way too many unforced errors. But, you have to give a lot of credit to Kent State. They're a good, solid team, they really challenged our attackers to perform at a high level and unfortunately we weren't able to do that. It's really frustrating because I didn't feel like we played that well, but we were right there in every set."
Next up, Morehead State faces Montana tomorrow at 2 p.m. ET as they continue play in the Comfort Inn-vitational.
