MOREHEAD, Ky. - Following a tough 81-77 overtime loss at UT Martin in their league opener, Morehead State men's basketball (4-10, 0-1) faces Eastern Illinois (8-6, 0-1) in their first league game at home on Thursday night at 7:45 p.m. ET.
Thursday night's game marks the first of four straight at Johnson Arena for the Eagles.
Earlier this week, freshman guard
Jordan Walker earned his second-straight OVC Freshman of the Week honor. He is the first Morehead State player to win Freshman of the Week since Derick Echols (12/29/08) and is the first Eagle to win the honor twice in a season since Kenneth Faried did so in 2007-08.
He averaged 19.0 points, 4.0 rebounds, 3.0 assists and 2.5 steals, while hitting 50 percent (13-of-26) from the field and 60 percent (6-of-10) from 3-point range in two contests.
At UT Martin, Walker scored a season-high 26 points on 6-of-9 three-point shooting. At one point of the second half he scored 11 straight points for the Eagles, including a 9-0 run by himself. He opened the week with 12 points, six rebounds, six assists and five steals against Asbury.
The native of Indianapolis, Ind., ranks second in the OVC in three-point percentage (48.8%). Over his last six games he is averaging 13.3 points and 3.2 rebounds.
With the overtime loss at UTM, the Eagles have lost their last three OVC openers. Last year, they won three straight following their loss at Murray State in the opener.
Morehead State is now 0-2 in overtime games this season. They have lost four straight overtime games dating back to last season. They were 1-2 in overtime games last year, including a loss in game three of the CBI Finals at Nevada.
With 82.0 points per game, the Eagles lead the OVC and rank 36th in the country. Their field goal percentage is .463, which ranks fourth in the OVC, and their three-point field goal percentage (.381) ranks second. They have scored 100 points in three of their four wins.
In their wins, they are averaging 106.5 points, while they are averaging 72.2 points in their losses.
Morehead State is 13-24 all-time versus Eastern Illinois. Last year, the Eagles lost 84-82 in overtime at EIU, despite leading by 11 with under five minutes to go.
Xavier Moon had 17 points and was 3-of-6 from three-point range. Overall, the Eagles have lost two straight to EIU. Prior to those two losses, they had won five straight.
Tickets are still available for Thursday night's game and it will air live on the OVC Digital Network.
