MOREHEAD, Ky. – In its last home match of the 2017 season, Morehead State soccer fell to Belmont by a final tally of 2-0 on a chilly Friday night at Jayne Stadium.
The Eagles drop to 3-12-1 overall, with a 2-6-1 record in the Ohio Valley Conference. Belmont moves to 10-5-1, 6-3 OVC.
The Bruins wasted no time getting on the scoreboard, as Belmont senior Tara Austin crossed a long ball into the box for a pinpoint finish by Emily Whitcomb at the match's five-minute mark. The Bruins managed one more shot on target in the opening period, taking a 1-0 lead into halftime.
The second half went over 37 minutes without a change in the status quo, as Morehead State goalkeeper
Michelle Washburn racked up four saves to go along with her one from the first half. However, an errant throw by the Eagles on the defensive side of the pitch led to an uncanny goal by Belmont freshman Julie Garst in the 83rd minute, sealing the two-score victory.
Washburn's five saves on the night bring her total to 92 in her junior campaign, catapulting her to a tie for the ninth-best single-season mark in school history.
Morehead State freshman
Katie Kiolbassa led the Eagles with two shots in her second career start, landing one attempt on goal. Fellow freshmen
Caitlyn Burdine,
Holly Logsdon, and
Tia Williams each added one more, as only Burdine's attempt fell on target. Junior
Dani Wilson was the only non-freshman to record a shot for the Eagles after receiving the starting nod at forward.
Morehead State will conclude its regular season with one final road trip later this weekend. The Eagles take on Austin Peay (7-6-3, 2-4-3 OVC) on Sunday at 2 p.m. ET, broadcast live on the
OVC Digital Network.
