CLARKSVILLE, Tenn. – After playing to a scoreless deadlock for more than 75 minutes, Morehead State soccer ultimately fell at Austin Peay by a 2-0 final on Sunday afternoon at Morgan Brothers Soccer Field.
Morehead State concludes the 2017 season at 3-13-1, 2-7-1 Ohio Valley Conference. Austin Peay moves to 8-6-3 (3-4-3 OVC) and secures a spot in next week's OVC Tournament.
Morehead State attempted five shots in the first half of Sunday's match, two more than the opposition.
Cara Maher,
Ashley Ritchie,
Melissa Pickren,
Dani Wilson, and
Shelby Huddleston each tried a go at the net, but only Maher's shot fell on target. Goalkeeper
Michelle Washburn was not tested, as none of the Governors' three shots were on goal.
The second half, however, proved to be a different story for the Eagles. Maher tried two more shots, notching Morehead State's only other attempt on goal, but the rest of the offense could not match the output of the first half. Austin Peay senior Kirstin Robertson netted the game-winner in the 76th minute off an assist from Pamela Penaloza, only to be followed by a second APSU goal from McKenzie Dixon eight minutes later.
Washburn made two saves in the second half, bringing her total to 94 on the season. The junior's 2017 campaign ranks as the ninth-best single-season performance in school history.
Morehead State will graduate two players from its roster, both starters on the defensive back line for the majority of the year.
Tayler Stivers started 48 of the 75 matches in which she appeared over her five-year career. She accumulated one goal, one assist, 17 shot attempts, and seven shots on goal.
Marisa Lavatori appeared in all 17 matches this season, making 13 starts after transferring from Northern Kentucky in 2016. She recorded two goals, two assists, 10 shot attempts, and four shots on target.
Morehead State falls short of qualification for postseason play for just the second time since winning the OVC Tournament in 2013.
