MOREHEAD, Ky. -- With only six Ohio Valley Conference regular season matches remaining, the Morehead State Eagles are eager for success and to move up in the standings this weekend when they host Tennessee State and Belmont.
MSU and TSU will square off at Wetherby Gym Friday at 7 p.m. ET. Saturday's match against is at 2 p.m. Due to some physical circumstances at Wetherby, the match may be moved to Johnson Arena. Check MSU's official social media accounts (MSUEagles) for updates as to whether the match will remain there or be played in the basketball venue.
Both matches are scheduled to be broadcast live on the OVC Digital Network. The Eagles are 11-12 overall and 2-8 in the circuit.
Head coach
Jaime Gordon has been pleased with his team's offense lately but still would like to see his defense step up again.
"We had some growing pains -Â especially on offense - early in the year, but as we have gotten into OVC play, I have been impressed with how our offense has picked up. On the flip side our defense, which had been very strong, needs to improve. Teams are hitting at too high a percentage against us lately, and we need to fix some areas there."
Freshman
Lauren Rokey now ranks seventh in the league in kills at 3.11 per set. Fellow freshman
Olivia Lohmeier continues to be one of the best hitters in the conference at .311.
In the serve and pass game, sophomore libero
Danielle McCarson ranks third in the league with 30 aces.
Tennessee State is 6-18 overall and also 2-8 in the OVC. The Tigers did knock off MSU 3-1 on Sept. 23. Belmont is 11-11 on the year and 6-4 in the league. The Bruins handed the Eagles a 3-0 setback on Sept. 22.
"We had a key injury the last time we played these two, and it came late in the week so we had to make some adjustments," said Gordon. "I know both of these teams have made some lineup switches since we last played and we have too, so it will be a challenging weekend again."
