JACKSONVILLE, Ala. – Despite leading for over 15 minutes in a back-and-forth contest that saw nine ties and 10 lead changes, Morehead State women's basketball dropped a 70-64 decision to Jacksonville State early Saturday evening.
The Eagles' first conference loss moves them to 1-1 in Ohio Valley Conference play, with a 10-5 mark on the season. Jacksonville State moves to 2-0 in the OVC and 7-6 overall.
An 8-2 run gave the Gamecocks a 17-13 lead after the first quarter, but Morehead State responded to take a 34-33 lead into half. Though each team ended the day with 34 points in the paint, the Eagles were outscored overall in both the third and fourth quarters.
Morehead State was outrebounded for only the second time in 2017-18, allowing a 42-35 advantage to Jacksonville State. The Gamecocks coughed up 20 turnovers to the Eagles' 12, marking the second loss for Morehead State in the nine instances it has won the turnover battle this season.
The MSU starting backcourt combined for 38 points, led by a game-high 10 made field goals from
Miranda Crockett. The 5-foot-8 junior, who's now just 36 points shy of becoming the school's 25th all-time 1,000-point scorer, finished with 21 points, five rebounds, two assists, and three steals. Redshirt junior
Darianne Seward added 17 points, five boards, two assists, and two steals in a game-high 38 minutes.
Eriel McKee was the Eagles' only other scorer who produced a double-digit output, notching 10 points to go along with three rebounds, two assists, two blocks, and a pair of steals. Reigning OVC Newcomer of the Week
Tierra McGowan led Morehead State on the glass with 12 boards, complemented by six points and one steal.
Following the loss, Morehead State is set to return home for the first time in seven games. The Eagles will tip off with Eastern Illinois on Thursday at 8:15 p.m. ET at Johnson Arena.
