MOREHEAD, Ky. - After going 2-2 during opening weekend, Morehead State softball heads to Louisiana this weekend to play five games.

They will play Buffalo and Middle Tennessee on Friday at 4 and 6 p.m., Alcorn State on Saturday at 6 p.m., and UT Arlington and host Southeastern Louisiana on Sunday at 10 a.m. and 12 p.m. ET.

The Eagles opened the season with two wins and two losses at the Kennesaw State Tournament last weekend. They opened with a 1-0 loss to Saint Louis before trouncing South Carolina State, 15-2, and shutting out host Kennesaw State, 6-0. They closed the tournament with a 9-0 loss to Kennesaw State.

"Overall, I was pleased with a lot of things I saw. I see the potential of this team and as we get more games under our belt we're going to evolve and we're going to become even stronger," said head coach David Williams.

Junior pitcher Chelsea McManaway struck out 21 batters and allowed just one earned run in 13.0 innings of work. She recorded her first win at Morehead State when she shut out Kennesaw State in a 6-0 victory. She allowed six hits and struck out 12 in seven innings in the win.

"Chelsea did an exceptional job and our defense played well behind her, as well. Her performance really helped us get that win against a really good Kennesaw State team. She kept their offense at bay, which is tough to do," said Williams. "She has a lot of movement with her pitches and she really hides the ball well in her motion, which makes it difficult for hitters to pick up the ball."

Junior catcher Robyn Leighton led the way offensively for the Eagles, hitting .417 with a double, triple, two home runs and eight runs batted in. Against South Carolina State, she finished a single shy of the cycle, hit a grand slam, and finished with seven RBI.

"Robyn got off to a bit of slow start in the first game, but the rest of the way she really came through for us and hit the ball well. She was the catalyst and really helped us get things going," said Williams.

Coach Williams believes that the 6-0 win over Kennesaw State shows how good this team can be this season.

"I told our players after that win that if you can beat a team like that with a very solid pitcher, and not just beat them, but shut them out, that shows you what you're capable of doing. If we can play like that against Kennesaw State, we should be able to compete with anyone in our league," said Williams.

Live stats and a paid live video stream will be available for the games against Buffalo, UT Arlington, and Southeastern Louisiana.
