NASHVILLE, Tenn. - Morehead State women's basketball's late rally came up short as they fell 73-67 to No. 7 Eastern Kentucky in the first round of the OVC Tournament at Municipal Auditorium.
The Eagles entered the tournament as the No. 2 seed, which tied for their highest seed in tourney history.
"All year long, our team has fought hard and competed. We were down 20-plus points and had opportunities late to get it down to two, which says a lot," said head coach
Greg Todd. "Give Eastern Kentucky a lot of credit, they came out and played well."
The Eagles trailed by as many as 21 points, but utilized a 15-2 run to pull within 64-56 with just under three minutes to go. Senior
Aaliyah Wells then took a three from the wing that would have trimmed the lead to two with 30 seconds to go, but it rimmed out.
They cut the lead to as low as five before eventually falling by six.
"The last five minutes, we fought, we didn't want to give up. We got our motor running a little bit and it turned things around for us. Unfortunately, we came up just short," said sophomore guard
Miranda Crockett.
Morehead State shot just 37 percent for the game, but shot 63 percent in the fourth quarter while mounting their late rally. They entered the fourth quarter shooting 1-of-9 from three-point range and then shot 4-of-10 from deep in the final stanza.
Crockett led the Eagles with 16 points, while shooting 7-of-13 from the floor, and adding six rebounds. Sophomore
Darianne Seward added 13 points and seven assists, while senior
Shay Steele had 12 points. Junior
Eriel McKee finished with 10 points and eight rebounds.
With the loss, Morehead State's record moves to 21-9 on the season. With 20-plus wins on the year, the Eagles now wait to see if they will participate in a national postseason tournament.
