MURFREESBORO, Tenn. - Morehead State women's basketball utilized a balanced attack, but fell at Middle Tennessee State in the first round of the WNIT, 67-58.
With the loss, the Eagles conclude their season with a 21-10 record. It marks their seventh 20-win season in program history and their first ever appearance in the WNIT.
"I felt very pleased with our effort tonight. I thought our girls played very hard. We were right there in striking distance and had some chances to knock down some late threes, but couldn't get them to fall," said head coach
Greg Todd.
After trailing by as much as 13 in the fourth quarter, Morehead State trimmed the lead to five at 63-58 with just over a minute to go. They had a chance to cut the lead to two on their next possession, but senior
KayK Tate's three-point attempt from the top of the key hit the back of the rim.
Nine different players scored for the Eagles, with sophomore
Miranda Crockett, senior
Aaliyah Wells and junior
Brooke Todd all finishing in double figures.
Crockett led the way with 11 points on 5-of-11 shooting, while Wells and Todd each finished with 10 points. Todd also added 10 rebounds and four blocks, marking the second double-double of her career.
The Eagles struggled from the floor in the loss, shooting 35 percent from the floor and just 4-of-18 from three-point range. MTSU shot just 37 percent overall, but managed to hit 6-of-12 from deep. Morehead State shot 6-of-8 from the free throw line, while the Blue Raiders shot 17-of-22 from the stripe.
"You couldn't ask for any more from our seniors or this team. To finish our season with 21 wins and a postseason appearance, I am very pleased with the way our season went," said Todd. "We set the bar high this year and we are very optimistic looking toward the future."
