MOREHEAD, Ky. – The Morehead State cross country teams both finished third as they hosted the Eagle Opener Friday night at the former Sunnybrook Golf Course.
Sophomore
Farah Abdulkarim led the men's squad, while sophomore
Alison Chinn paced the women's team.
"Overall I think it went pretty well, conditions were rough out here, but the kids did a really great job competing," head coach
Stephen Picucci said. "We are pleased with it, the season is just getting started, and we had a lot of fans out supporting us so it was great."
Abdulkarim crossed the finish line in seventh place at 15:29.2, among the 48-runner field.
Chinn covered the 5K course in 19:30.2. Sophomore
Caitlin Cunningham wasn't too far behind crossing the finish line in 19:38.6.
In the men's race, the Eagles also placed two more runners in the top 15. Junior
Justin Moakler was eighth at 15:30.8, and junior
Shane Rigsby was 13th at 15:40.8. Rounding out the top 25 across the finish line for Morehead State were sophomore
Aaron Wier (15:51.9), senior
Dylan Rich (15:58.3) and junior
Jordan Carrington (16:02.4).
Senior
Taylor Montgomery (20:03.7), junior
Gloria Corona-Luna (20:08.8), freshman
Madison Pelfrey (20:14.1), and freshman
Maggie Kiper (20:15.9) finished in the top 25 for the Eagles.
Eastern Kentucky won both races. Kentucky was in second, and Marshall also competed.
Both teams are back in action on Friday, Sept. 15 at the Virginia Tech Alumni Invitational in Blacksburg, Va.
