MOREHEAD, Ky. -- Renewing an old rivalry from two conferences, the Morehead State football team heads to Austin Peay on Saturday to battle the Governors at 7 p.m. ET.
The Eagles (1-1) face a Gov squad that is 0-2 but held tight against FBS foes Cincinnati and Miami (Ohio). The teams have not faced each other since 2006, the last season in the PFL for APSU. Since then the Govs have played in the OVC again but enter the contest with an OVC-record 29-game losing streak.
The game can be heard live on WIVY-96.3 FM in the Morehead area or live via links on MSUEagles.com. The contest will also air live on the OVC Digital Network.
QUOTING COACH TENYER
On Austin Peay -- "Everyone might think Austin Peay is a lower level opponent but they are a full scholarship team just like we faced at Liberty. They are much improved and very athletic. We will have to be sharp and compete the entire game
On the Liberty game -- "It was an identity game for us. I really like the way our players competed. I just wish we could have kept it a little closer for a longer time, we had some adversity in the first half."
On making progress from Week 1 - "I felt like we have made progress. We had some adversity early on in that game last week, but that will help us down the road."
On QB
Lawson Page's play - "I think Lawson showed a lot of poise. We protected him a lot better later on last week, and we tried to do some more drop back passes against a bigger and faster defensive front than we'll probably see in our conference. He is a tough guy and a great leader."
On establishing the run game better -- "We really put an emphasis on the run game and sticking with it this year. We didn't run the ball very well early on last week, but as the game wore on we got more confident and were able to run the ball much better."
GAME NOTES THE AUSTIN PEAY SERIES
Morehead State renews an old Ohio Valley Conference and Pioneer Football League rivalry today at Austin Peay. Overall, the Eagles lead the series 26-17 (with one additional win in 1989 later vacated). The teams have not played since 2006 though when Austin Peay left the PFL. The Eagles have won 10 of the last 11 meetings and 17 of the last 20 dating back to 1986.
Â
ONE TOWN.ONE TEAM
Morehead and the region have shown tremendous support for the Eagle football program, and in fact MSU has led the Pioneer Football league in attendance for four consecutive seasons. Last year, MSU averaged 5,736 and drew 5,846 to the season opener.
Â
AGAINST THE OVC ON THE GRIDIRON
Of course with Morehead State previously playing in the OVC, the football team has played all the current football-playing members. The last OVC opponent for MSU was at Eastern Kentucky in 2014. The Eagles' best series record against an OVC foe is Austin Peay at 26-17.
Â
THE PAGE HAS BEEN TURNED
Redshirt junior QB
Lawson Page has turned some heads in his first year starting. He was 21-for-23 for 284 yards and four touchdowns, completing his first 15 passes, against Kentucky Christian. Last season he was the third and fourth-down situational QB and did not attempt a pass. Page ranks sixth nationally in completion percentage (72.2) and 11th in efficiency (162.2).
Â
MOVING THE CHAINS ONCE AGAIN
In the opening two games, the offense has generated 51 first downs, which ranks eighth in the nation in the FCS. The Eagles produced 35 first down situations in the season opener against KCU. In fact, Morehead State's offense has ranked in the top three in the PFL in first downs the last four seasons, including leading the league in 2014 and 2015.
PASS HAPPY
In the past three seasons, Morehead State's pass offense has put up at least 200 yards in all but two of the 24 total games. In 15 of those, the Eagles' quarterbacks have thrown for more 300 yards.
Â
HISTORY WAS MADE
Redshirt freshmen running backs
Roberto London and
Logan Holbrook made MSU history in the season opener versus Kentucky Christian. The duo both rushed for more than 100 yards and became the first pair of program history to both rush for 100+ yards in their first career games.
Â
GOOD COMPANY
Morehead State was ONE of only FIVE FCS school to have two 100-yard rushers in the same game in week one - joining North Dakota State, Portland State Northern Arizona and Cal Poly.
Â
HE'S GOT A LEG UP
Freshman kicker
Andrew Foster's 53-yard field goal against Liberty was the second-longest by an FCS kicker this season and the longest field goal of Week 2. It is the longest field goal made in the PFL since Billy Cundiff's PFL record 62-yard boot in 2000.
Â
BACKFIELD IN MOTION
Sophomore linebacker
Jerome Brooks was credited with 2.5 tackles in the backfield at Liberty, giving him four stops behind the line of scrimmage this season. That total is the fourth highest so far in the PFL.
Â
BOONE CAN BOOM
Redshirt freshman punter
Bradley Boone's 46.7-yard punting average in the first two games ranks third in the nation in FCS. The converted tight end has boomed three punts over 50 yards already and landed three inside the 20- yard line. He had a 67-yarder that pinned KCU at its own 10-yard line in week one and smashed a 56-yard boot at No. 20 Liberty last week.
