MOREHEAD, Ky. -- Morehead State Volleyball will look for more success this weekend when the Eagles take on three foes in the Keystone State - Pennsylvania. MSU faces Norfolk State, Bucknell and host St. Francis at the Red Flash Classic in Loretto, Pa.
The tournament opens with the Eagles against Norfolk State - the fourth Mid-Eastern Athletic Conference foe this year - at 4 p.m. ET Friday. On Saturday, Morehead State battles Bucknell at 11:30 a.m. and St. Francis at 4 p.m. Live stats (same link all weekend) are available on MSUEagles.com.
Morehead State (6-4) is coming off its second straight 2-1 weekend after defeating South Carolina State and Troy 3-0 last weekend at home. Five of the Eagles' six wins have come in shutout fashion, and MSU has averaged 13.0 kills, 13.0 assists, 2.3 aces and 2.4 blocks per set when it wins in three sets. The Eagles have also held opponents to just a .063 attack efficiency in those five wins.
"We are making some significant strides from when the season began," said head coach
Jaime Gordon. "This will be another good opportunity this weekend to tighten some areas up before we start OVC matches. We still have a long way to go to where we would like to be in late October and early November."
Norfolk State is 2-5, Bucknell is 2-5 and St. Francis is 4-6 heading into weekend action.
"The last two weekends we have faced teams with very similar styles, but I know this weekend we will face three teams with very different approaches, so how we adjust match to match will be key to our success," Gordon added.
Morehead State won three OVC weekly awards this past week, with freshman middle
Olivia Lohmeier earning Newcomer of the Week, junior middle
Maddie Fella winning Defensive Player of the Week and junior setter/right-side
Jordan Jones claiming Setter of the Week accolades.
Lohmeier has shined in her first collegiate campaign, ranking second in the OVC in hitting percentage at .356 to go along with 2.4 kills per set.
"Our setters (
Jordan Jones and
Chandler Clark) have been setting me up so well, I have to give credit to them," she said. "I think I have adjusted pretty well to college volleyball. It helped that my club team played at such a high level too."
Fella, who ranked eighth in the league in blocks last year, now finds herself ranked first with 38 rejections. As a team, the defense has limited opponents to .164 hitting, third in the conference.
Morehead State will return home Saturday and have the week off before starting league action next weekend at Tennessee State and Belmont.
