1998 Football Team Set To Be Honored During Homecoming
MOREHEAD, Ky. -- One of the most exciting and successful teams in Morehead State history will be honored during Homecoming this year as the 1998 team celebrates the 20-year anniversary of winning the non-scholarship national championship.

MSU moved to non-athletic aid football beginning in 1994, absorbing an 0-11 year in 1994 and a 2-8 campaign in 1995, but it didn't take long for the Eagles to rebuild into one of the nation's top teams. The 1998 squad went 9-2 and averaged 39 points per game. They reached the 50+ point plateau four times.

Eventual All-American quarterback David Dinkins, who is in the Athletics Hall of Fame, became just the third-ever Division I-AA (now the FCS) QB to throw for and rush for more than 1,000 yards each in the same season. Dinkins rushed for 1,169 yards and scored a school-record 20 times on the ground. He also passed for 1,812 yards and 14 touchdowns.

Leading the way up front for Dinkins was offensive lineman Bubba Combs, who was named the Football Gazette National Offensive Lineman of the Year and an All-American.

The team finished third in the nation in scoring offense (39.1), fifth in total offense (476.1/game) and fifth in rushing offense (291.8/game). Individually, Kimba Bush was in the top 40 in the nation in punt returns, while Todd Dinkel ranked 18th in the country in punting.

Dinkins finished in the top 25 nationally in scoring, total offense, passing efficiency and rushing, while many others contributed to the Eagles setting the program record for wins in a season.

Morehead State hosts Valparaiso at 2:05 p.m. ET Saturday for Homecoming.
