Soccer 2018 Campaign Ends With 2-1 Overtime Loss To SIUE in OVC Tourney

RICHMOND, Ky.
– The Morehead State soccer team was defeated 2-1 in overtime by SIU Edwardsville in the first round of the Ohio Valley Conference Soccer Championship Tournament on a rainy Friday afternoon at EKU Soccer Field.
 
The teams played to a 1-1 tie through the first 90 minutes before SIUE forward Andrea Frerker got an open look at the goal and capitalized on it 3:33 into the overtime period to end the season for Morehead State.
 
The loss brings the Eagles season to an end after reaching the conference tournament for the first time since 2015. Morehead State closed out the season with a 5-14 overall record.
 
SIUE advances to the tournament's quarterfinal round and will face Eastern Kentucky on Sunday at 1:00 p.m. ET
 
The Eagles drew first blood in the 36th minute of the match when Samantha Damante found Katie Quinn on a free kick into the box that Quinn was able to play off the crossbar and into the goal. The goal was Quinn's second of 2018 while Damante registered third assist.
 
Morehead State held onto the 1-0 advantage through the remainder of the first half.
 
The Cougars netted the equalizing goal three minutes into the second half. SIUE attempted four corner kicks in a two-minute span before capitalizing on the final one with a header goal by Angel Ikeda. Ikeda's third goal of the season was assisted by Becca Jostes.
 
The teams remained scoreless the remainder of regulation despite both teams having solid looks at the goal.
 
Senior forward Dani Wilson took two shots while senior forward Cara Maher also took a shot in the final five minutes of play. SIUE's Amanda DiNardo got a look in the 87th minute that was stopped by senior goalkeeper Michelle Washburn.
 
Washburn recorded eight saves in the match.
 
Frerker went on to net the game-winning goal in the 93rd minute
 
The loss was Morehead State's fifth loss in overtime of 2018.
