MOREHEAD, Ky– The Morehead State soccer team knocked off Ohio Valley Conference rival Austin Peay, 1-0, on Sunday afternoon at Jayne Stadium.
Â
A goal in the 5th minute by senior forward
Dani Wilson proved to be enough as the Eagles defense and senior goalkeeper
Michelle Washburn was able to contain the Governors' offense.
Â
Wilson, who has now scored in back-to-back games, was able to beat the Austin Peay defender to a through ball played up by freshman forward
Colleen Swift. The senior from Elizabethtown, Ky., took full advantage of the goalkeeper being out of position and got off a clean shot into the back-left corner of the goal.
Â
The goal was Wilson's sixth of 2018 and the 15th of her career. Swift notched her second assist of the season on the goal as well.
Â
In goal for the Eagles, Washburn made her second start of 2018 and made five saves on her way to recording her second-career shutout. Her first came on September 3, 2017, in a 2-0 Morehead State win over Chattanooga.
Â
"We were really consistent in everything we did," said head coach
Warren Lipka. "We defended well and it was just a good solid win that we really needed."
Â
Along with strong defense, the Eagles were also able to outshoot the Governors 16-12.
Â
The victory improves Morehead State to 3-11 overall and 2-4 in OVC play where they now have six points. Austin Peay drops to 8-5-1 and 3-3-1 in the conference while remaining with 10 points.
Â
The Eagles will take the field at Jayne Stadium their next time out on Friday with a challenge from Tennessee Tech that will begin at 6:00 p.m. ET.
